Charter School Oversight

Charter schools in New Zealand are monitored by two separate entities: the Charter School Authorisation Board and the Charter School Agency.

Each has a distinct role in the establishment and ongoing operation of schools.

Charter School Authorisation Board

The Charter School Authorisation Board is responsible for assessing and approving applications to establish new charter schools.

It also oversees the performance of charter schools and will step in if a sponsor is not meeting its requirements.

Charter School Agency

The Charter School Agency monitors and reports on charter school performance. It manages contracts with charter schools and delivers funding.

The Agency supports the Authorisation Board.
