About charter schools

Charter schools are public schools. They add choice and diversity to New Zealand’s education system. Just like state schools they don’t charge fees.

Charter schools are run by a sponsor. The sponsor is given flexibility so they can do things differently and deliver strong results for students. In return, sponsors must meet clear expectations.

We contract charter schools to deliver results for students. Sponsors’ contracts include clear targets for student attendance, achievement and financial management.
